EL DUENDE SHORT FILM

El Duende is a short film written and directed by Maria Inês Lopes, who also stars in it.

Filmed in Madrid in 2015 as the final project of the Master's in Film Direction at TAI School of Arts and Entertainment. Shot in 2 periods of 7 hours imposed by the school.

Mariana (Maria Inês Lopes), a woman in her late twenties, lives in Madrid with her close friend Pepa (Tosca Schönberg). These two young foreign women strive through their everyday life on the path into full adulthood in the city they love albeit not their own. As they go through another ordinary day, Mariana tells Pepa about “el duende”, who just passed by her on the street, a stranger whom she used to have constant fortuitous encounters with around the city, exchanging intense looks but no words. An urban fairytale about chance, connection and friendship.

EXERCISE PASSAGES
EXPRESS YOURSELF
EXERCISE PASSAGES
Exercise premisses: Passages between cuts and times and spaces.

A young woman is victim of a series of disencounters while being tormented in an dreamlike stroll through the city (of Madrid).

À GRAÇA (at Graça)
EXERCISE MUSICAL INTERMISSION
Exercise premisses: The use of diegetic music as the action starting point.
A young woman is getting home at the end of the day. A city, a neighbourhood, a house. A typical day, although from another decade, in a typical  Lisbon’s neighbourhood. The typical music sounding on the radio triggers and translates emotions not as trivial as the everyday moment itself.

Music: “Caracóis” & “Nem às paredes confesso” Amália Rodrigues.

This is an academical video with no comercial purposes. Maria Inês Lopes does not own neither the literature material nor the music.

À MINHA IRMÃ (to my sister)
EXERCISE REALITY VS FICTION
Exercise premisses: Join and play with FICTION & REALITY through a close up of a human face looking directly at the camera.
Different archive images were used, from “home videos” with  a documentary style, relative to different moments of time and space. As they were  re-edited, a new interpretation was born, as a completely fictional meaning was attributed to them.
THE (K)NIGHT OF CUPS
EXERCISE CHARACTERS AND SPACE
Exercise premisses: Camera movements dependent on and dictated by characters.
